CapeCodsters - A Place for Those That Love Cape Cod

This month I'd like to talk a little bit about the farms that we have here on Cape Cod and how you can be part of their Harvest as a CSA member. Believe it or not there are farmers that are continuing the traditions here on Cape Cod of working the land for their keep. You can purchase a "share" in the farm's weekly harvest which is called "Community Supported Agriculture" (CSA).

"Farm CSA Week 10" by thebittenword.com

There are many advantages from buying a share in a farm on Cape Cod:

#1 You are getting food that is picked at its maximum ripeness - which means chock full of nutrients and chock full of flavor.

#2 You are supporting a fellow Cape Codder rather that a CEO of a large chain supermarket and the money stays here in our economy.

#3 You will find many different heirloom varieties of fruits and vegetables - so yellow and purple tomatoes, green, orange squashes, etc that you will never find at a chain supermarket.

#4 You will be forced to eat much healthier and learn how to cook these items as you will get a basket full of them every week.

#5 Your food travels from Dennis to Yarmouth or Falmouth to Mashpee, not Chile to Florida to Cape Cod.

There are other advantages, but I think those five reasons there are sufficient enough to give a CSA a shot. One of the reasons I am posting this now in February is that the CSA's on Cape Cod tend to sell out very quickly, so if you are interested, I suggest you contact one of the following farms ASAP:

Eldredge Farm & Nursery
Contact: Steve Coleman
Phone: 508 255 8444
Address: Eldredge Farm Cartway Brewster, MA 02631

Pleasant Lake Farm
Contact: Skipper Lee
Phone: 508-432-1992

Coonamessett Farm
Contact:Ronald Smolowitz
Phone:508-563-2560
Address:277 Hatchville Road East Falmouth, MA 02536

I do believe that the Cape Abilities Farm also has a salad club.

I was a member at the Pleasant Lake Farm last year and Veronica did an amazing job with growing really cool veggies - if you have any questions about CSA's, feel free to comment or shoot me an email.

Thanks Ellyn - I've tried to contact Hawks Wing numerous times to no avail - they have a nice website, but I don't think anyone mans it.
